Unconventional

Today is the first day of the the “Show Cause Hearings” for owners of tax foreclosed properties in Detroit. Instead of being held in the normal location at Cobo Hall (yup, the massive convention center is where Wayne County convenes people facing tax foreclosure over a grueling 12 days), they’ve been moved to the Treasurer’s office at 400 Monroe street, probably because the North American Auto Show is going on at the same time. It’s nice that the ongoing automotive legacy of the Motor City trumped the growing tragedy of the Foreclosure City.

The foreclosure profile this year includes a devastating 35,000 occupied properties, easily home to 100,000 adults and children. Overall there are over 54,000 properties in auction. Hopefully those that suffer the snow drifts, paid parking and long lines at the Show Cause hearings will get real solutions and lasting results to avoid their foreclosure.
